Born in Pannonia (Hungary) around 317, a legionary (vérifie), St Martin became bishop of Tours from 370 to 396. He died at nearby Candes. The act of Charity represented here, he cut his cloak in half to clothe a shivering beggar at the gate of Amiens on a winter day in 337.
